Introduction to room types
Room types represent the categories of accommodation you are selling.
Create room types that match your unique offerings, whether you have hotel rooms, apartments, caravans, cottages, cabins, villas, camping sites, beds, or even houseboats!
Each room type can feature different characteristics such as specific views, bedding configuration and occupancy limits. For example, rooms with ocean views can be sold at higher prices.
Availability (inventory) settings apply across all rate plans associated with a room type.
Similarly, room type details (such as amenities) and settings (like occupancy) apply to all associated room rates.
Create a room type
You'll need to create matching room types in each connected channel to align with those in Little Hotelier. To add a new room type:
Navigate to Rooms and rates > Room types
Click Add room type
Configure the settings below
General information
The standardised room type names automatically translate into the core languages on your booking engine, helping you reach international guests. These names are also sent to channels connected via Channels Plus.
Room category: Choose a category from the dropdown menu (not visible to guests)
Room type name: Select a name based on your chosen category, which will be translated on your booking engine and distributed to connected channels on Channels Plus
Internal room type name: Add a code or shorthand name for internal identification purposes
Example: If your Room type name is "Superior Chalet", you might use "SC1" as the internal name for easier reference.
Description for guest: Write a description (minimum 75 characters recommended) for your booking engine and connected channels on Channels Plus
Custom room type name: Optionally enter a custom display name for your booking engine, or leave blank to use the standard room type name
Occupancy
Maximum occupancy: Total number of guests allowed in this room type
Maximum adults: Maximum number of adult guests permitted
Maximum children: Maximum number of child guests permitted
Maximum infants: Maximum number of infant guests allowed (infants don't count toward maximum occupancy)
Notes:
Maximum age settings for children and infants may be configurable directly in connected channels
For booking engine age settings, navigate to Direct booking > Configuration > Guest display options > Occupancy age settings
These occupancy details sync with channels connected via Channels Plus
Features
Room features sync to your booking engine and connected channels. Include comprehensive details for better guest information.
Room size: Dimensions of the room
Bathroom: Number of bathrooms (1-10)
Smoking policy: Allowed smoking status
Room view: Any special views such as beach, city, garden or pool views
Amenities and facilities: Available features like TV, microwave, balcony, or air conditioning (the first five display prominently on your booking engine)
Bed type configuration: Available bed options such as single, king, or sofa beds
Add bedroom: For multi-bedroom units, specify bed arrangements in each bedroom
Your booking engine displays these features as icons, improving the guest experience and helping travellers make informed booking decisions.
Media
High-quality images showcase your room's appeal and help guests make booking decisions.
Upload high quality photos for each room type to set accurate expectations. Make sure to properly assign images to the correct room types.
These images will appear on your booking engine and will be distributed to channels connected via Channels Plus.
If you remove an image from Little Hotelier, it will also be removed from any connected channels that receive media from your platform.
Set up a room type to sell by the bed (for hostels)
For hostels and dormitories selling individual beds, we recommend configuring room types as beds to enable individual bed sales on your booking engine and connected channels.
Example: With ten rooms where five have six beds each and five have four beds each, create two room types:
One bed in a six-bed dorm
One bed in a four-bed dorm
This configuration would provide 30 available beds across the six-bed dorms and 20 beds across the four-bed dorms, for a total property inventory of 50 beds
When creating a room type to sell by the bed:
Name it clearly for guests, such as 'Bed in 4-Bed Male Dorm'
Enter Number of rooms of this type (for example, bed in 4-Bed Male Dorm you would enter 4)
Set both Maximum occupancy and Maximum adults to 1
Select 'Bed' for Room category (always input '1' as it represents a single bed, not the entire dorm)
Use 'Single', 'Dormitory bed' or 'Bunk bed' for Bed type configuration
When managing inventory, input the number of available beds, not rooms
Edit or delete a room type
To modify or remove a room type:
Navigate to Rooms and rates > Room types
Click the ellipsis button (...) next to the relevant room type
Select either Edit room type or Delete room type from the Actions menu
Confirm your changes or deletion
Before deleting a room type
Deleting a room type is permanent and irreversible
Deletion removes all associated room rates and channel mappings, stopping all updates to these rates
